Sometimes, I think about my first job. On the day of my 18th birthday, my mom and I had been homeless (again) for some months. At 18, I was allowed to sign up for work with a local temp agency, and that’s what I did.
After bussing up to the agency, I went in with my information, ready to sign up and get a job. In the office, everyone was running on surprise: “It’s your actual birthday today, and you’re spending it here?” and other similar variations. Sleeping in your mom’s car, it turns out, is quite a motivator.
Ultimately, I got a job in a factory. I built displays and priced items on an assembly line for very little money for brands that — at the time — were luxury items (Victoria’s Secret, oh my!) and I was eventually able to get a shared appointment, where I applied and got into college.
What I truly got:
a taste of what’s possible when you can exercise your talent, will, and ability
A starting point.
Sometimes, that girl feels like a totally different person. I have to sit and remember what it felt like to be her.
This is your reminder that your journey can start anywhere AND END anywhere. You can change directions. You can aim higher. Remember who you are.
