HAPPY AUGUST! Woo! It’s finally a new month, and I’m almost out of one of my most frustrating classes (so far) in grad school. It’s the final week, and I have only TWO more assignments due. Then I get a whole week off! I can hardly stand the excitement. I know I’ve previously said that July was crazy, but July will be chill compared to August, y’all. My time management skills are going to be put to the test. I got hired for a new job today, and I don’t actually have any intention of quitting my first job. I am also still interviewing for job # 3. Uh.

Hahaha, my hustle is strong and I want to get as much done as I can while I can! It’s definitely going to be hard to manage it all, especially with grad school and all the other stuff I do as well (hello fitness and food), but all I can do is my best, right?
I’ve said before that being busy usually means I get a lot more done, and that’s true, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t also stress me out. I think the trick is to balance the stress level with the level of accomplishment you feel. You also have to take care to not let the little things get away from you, like cleaning, and groceries, etc. So, in order to practice my time management skills and to keep all of this stuff under control, I am definitely what you might call a “planner girl” (thanks, bae’s sister, for my title). I have no fewer than 3 separate planners that I am using at any one time. In addition to this, I utilize Google Calendar an obsessive amount. I’m also looking for a to-do list app, so if you know of a good one, let me know!

Some of these have duplicitous information, for sure, but honestly, just seeing my day written out multiple times helps me feel more organized. This helps me not to forget things, so I get more done. Time management can be so individualistic, though, so finding what works can be tough. So, since I’m trying to spend some (very short) time without classes next week getting set up for success (eyy) for the coming cray-cray weeks (months, years, I don’t know), I thought I might go over some of my favorite tips for time management!
Time Management Tips:
As you might have guessed, my first tip is to:
WRITE STUFF DOWN
Haha! This is so important! I can’t tell you how many times I thought I’d remember something, and I did! …long after it was supposed to be done. Writing things down not only helps you remember them, but it can make sure other people in your life know what’s going on (if you use a calendar). It can also help you feel less stressed to see what’s coming in written format. AND it can help you avoid scheduling conflicts for yourself! I take this one so seriously, I write things down over and over again, obviously.
Plan out your meals
I find that when I’m busy, especially, that if I don’t know what I’m going to eat, I end up wasting a lot of time musing over what it will be. I’m also more likely to eat junk, eat out, etc. So, I try to plan out the week in advance, and prep some foods I can put together quickly throughout the week.
When you are factoring in the activities for the day, really consider, realistically how long those items will take you. Then, add more time. You’re not really going to be able to run to the bank across town in 20 minutes, so by putting that in there, you’re needlessly stressing yourself out more.
Give yourself some chill time
Write it down if you have to! Don’t just be go, go, go, or when you stop, you’ll be crash, crash, crash. Let yourself relax. Schedule bath time, or a TV show you like. Whatever suits you best!
And finally, actually DO the items listed!
It doesn’t help anyone to write down a bunch of things that you never do! Your list just gets longer and longer. And I get overwhelmed. I make a rule to do any least three things on my list every single day. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes one or two (or all) of those things are the “relax” listings, but the idea is to not let the list sit for longer than I have to!
Anyway, those are some of the things that work for me! It’s taken me a long time to be able to manage my time well at all, so if anyone has any tips, let me know! This is as much a solicitation as it is a helpful list. LOL
